Refuge in Buddhism: Understanding the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha

By Marzia Islam on Jul 19, 2026

Taking refuge is the gateway to the Buddhist path. It is a formal commitment to seeking guidance from the "Three Jewels" (Triple Gem).

The Three Jewels Explained:

  • The Buddha: The Shambala Thangka teacher who showed that liberation is possible.

  • The Dharma: The teachings and the universal truths that lead to the cessation of suffering.

  • The Sangha: The spiritual community that supports and inspires our practice.

In Thangka art, these are often represented through complex mandalas or assembly trees. Taking refuge is not about escaping the world, but about finding a safe harbor within oneself through wisdom and compassion. Understanding these three pillars helps practitioners build a solid foundation for their daily mindfulness practice.
